Mosaics Masterclass (Two Days)

Date: Saturday, September 23, 2023
Ends: Saturday, September 30, 2023
Time: 10am - 4pm
Venue: The Courthouse
All materials are provided. You are welcome to bring your own design, whether this be for a house number plaque or a sign. You may also choose from one of the designs provided.

Learn what makes a mosaic come to life. This two-day masterclass workshop provides the fundamental elements of creating a mosaic with movement, style, colour and detail.

This two-day mosaic workshop is ideal for those who wish to build an understanding of what you would wish to achieve and the best methods to apply.

In doing so you will explore:

  • Materials
  • Texture
  • Colour
  • Cutting techniques
  • The art of lettering
  • Andamento – the flow and style of the mosaic
  • Different grout effects
  • Choosing the correct adhesive for application
  • Future project ideas

You will create a detailed 30cm sq indoor mosaic. Participants are encouraged to bring along their own design (drawn to scale) or select from those provided.

The workshop will be run by artist Sue Kershaw, whose designs feature sometimes thousands of intricate, hand-cut pieces known as tesserae. These pieces range from teacup shards made from Ganges clay that were collected in India, to seashore glass from Sicily. Gold leaf, aicis glass and French porcelain are also present throughout her work.

Sue facilitates workshops and community art projects across the UK, and works to commission from her studio based in Ryedale, North Yorkshire. Her commissions include a hospital mosaic fountain for NHS Hull, and a ‘Hope’ wall mosaic for Trafford Macmillans Care Centre. Sue’s work combines a love of nature and literature with geometrics:

I am passionately driven to achieve a harmonious balance between creating a strong initial design with the physical creation and arrangement of tesserae that flow throughout the work.’
