Going the ‘Course’: Improvers’ Hand-building

Date: Wednesday, June 5, 2024
Ends: Wednesday, July 3, 2024
Time: 1:30pm - 4:30pm
Venue: The Courthouse
All materials are provided. Just bring lots of enthusiasm – and perhaps an apron as clay work can be messy!

Have you been on a few ceramics workshops with us already and want to improve your existing skills? Well, you’re in the right place!

Join ceramic artist Michelle Wade on an improver’s course to build on fundamental ceramic hand building skills; relief carving, pinch pots and sgraffito will be taught alongside basic slip, underglaze and glaze techniques.

Fundamental ceramic hand-building skills which will include firstly relief carving into a slab of clay to create a wall plaque, looking at various tools and their uses as well as decorative mark-making techniques. After the piece has been bisque-fired we will look at applying underglazes in a few different ways to the plaques. The second project will be perfecting the art of making pinch pots to create 3D birds, using sculptural techniques, joining techniques, and using texture-making tools to enhance the form. The last project will be a coil-built pot or vase, then using slips and the sgraffito decorating technique we will create interesting surface patterns onto the greenware pot.

Dates: Wednesday 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th June & Weds 3rd July

Suitable For: Improvers.
