Get Hands On With: Fused Glass (4 week course)

Date: Wednesday, November 22, 2023
Ends: Wednesday, December 13, 2023
Time: 1:30 - 4:30 pm
Duration: 4 weeks
Venue: The Courthouse
All specialist materials and equipment will be provided but it will be helpful for participants to bring along a small sketchbook or notebook as there will be a certain amount of essential information to record as well as some preparation and design work involved.

Learn the skills and techniques for creating decorative and functional artefacts in fused glass under the guidance of our experienced tutor.

The tutor will guide you along the process of designing a concept to creating a finished piece over this four week course.

You will learn about the properties of different types of glass, the basics of what happens to glass when it is assembled and fired in different ways and will use this knowledge to design and make a number of objects of both a decorative and functional nature.

The course will also introduce you to the essential glass-making skills of marking, scoring and breaking sheet glass and how to ensure that the glass is cleaned and assembled ready for successful firing.

You will be given the opportunity consider the different firing schedules and the effects which can be achieved, and fire your work in stages, so that further work on the same piece can then be carried out in subsequent weeks.

The course is led by artist David Teece, an established maker and seller of specialised glass art from the heart of Yorkshire.

Inspired by light, colour and with a hint of the dramatic, David creates beautiful decorative items in fused and stained glass.

A graduate in Art and Design and a fully qualified teacher, David works from the peaceful Garden Studio in the heart of Masham. The studio houses three kilns and all the other necessary equipment, where David creates his own art works for sale in local outlets and completes individual commissions for private clients.

David also offers individual and small group tutorials in fused and stained glass for beginners and intermediates and the more specialised use of the vitrigraph kiln for more established glass artists.

“The skill of the fused glass artist combines not only the appreciation of line and form and the use of light and colour but also a knowledge of the chemistry of glass and how to use the kiln to achieve the desired effects through the careful application of controlled heating and cooling.”

Suitable For: These classes are suitable for all levels, including beginners.
