A joyful hour of laid-back jazz for a summer’s evening from an exciting trio of renowned musicians. Well-known as a jazz guitarist, composer and band leader, Derrick is joined by Jose Canha with his toasty bass sound and popular, eclectic percussionist Paul Smith.

The second in our Summer Music Series, presented in partnership with De Mowbray Music. Three laid-back Friday evening concerts, each lasting around an hour, they’re a chance to greet the weekend in style, joined by talented performers from a range of musical backgrounds. Series curated by composer and conductor Benjamin Ellin.

Derrick Harris

A well known jazz guitarist, composer and band leader, Derrick has worked in radio and television, taught at Leeds College of Music, played with orchestras such as the Halle and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and performed in venues up and down country.

Born in Swansea, South Wales. Graduated from Leeds College of Music where he also taught for a number of years. His most recent cd is called Ripples. A trio recording, it is his third under his own name. He was shortlisted for an award as composer/arranger of the year in the Jazz Yorkshire Awards and featured on the UK and Europe Jazz Showcase on

As well as leading his own groups, he frequently guests as a soloist with bands up and down the country. He is also to be heard as part of the Ronnie Bottomley Jazz Orchestra, the Yorkshire Jazz Orchestra directed by Tony Faulkner and the Al Wood Trio. Derrick’s guitar playing has been featured frequently on radio and television including with the Tony Faulkner Jazz Orchestra (Radio 2 ), and the Geoff Laycock Big Band (Radio 2). His long and varied career as a freelance guitarist has seen him working in West End and touring productions of shows such as Chicago, Dirty Dancing, Spamalot and Fiddler on The Roof. His playing was heard in the West Yorkshire Playhouse production of ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore”, and in the Sky Atlantic television drama series “Little Birds”.

Derrick works regularly with orchestras such as the Royal Northern Sinfonia, The Halle Orchestra, and The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Paul Smith

As well as organising and being the house drummer for one of the most successful venues in the North (The Head of Steam, Huddersfield), Paul Smith performs with an eclectic mix of bands. Recent performances include Alan Barnes with The Andy Cholerton Trio, The Tuba Dudes, The Derrick Harris Quartet, his own Trad Jazz Collective, Rhythm Deluxe et al.

José Canha

José was born in Setúbal, Portugal and began his musical journey as a lead vocalist for various alternative-rock bands during his late teens. After completing his army service, Canha co-founded the blues band “Charlie & the BluesCats,” which supported two B.B. King shows at the Lisbon and Porto coliseums, earning the band a reputation as one of Portugal’s top blues acts and performing on several European jazz and blues festivals.

Although initially self-taught, he began his electric bass study with Yuri Daniel, the bassist for Jan Garbarek, and later progressed towards the double bass, initiating his classical studies under Miguel Leiria Pereira. He also studied at the Escola de Jazz do Barreiro, the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, the Universidad de Évora and the London College of Music.

Today, José is an accomplished jazz double bassist and has collaborated with a range of projects across various genres and styles, from Bossa Nova, Jazz, Blues, R&B, Manouche, Rock, Funk, and Fado, in ensembles ranging from duets to orchestras and theatre production sets. Now based in the UK, he has been mostly focused on Jazz music and had the privilege of performing all over the country, sharing the stage with esteemed artists such as Greg Abate, Nigel Price, Jim Mullen, Quentin Collins, Simon Spillett, Julian Stringle, Art Themen, and many more.

  • If you need a specific seat or have any other access requirements, let us know
  • There is no parking at The Courthouse except for Blue Badge holders who must let us know they will be needing the space
