Fun creative workshops with a secret maths mission

If you found maths tricky at school, you’re likely to lack confidence with numbers as an adult. That can affect you in lots of little (and not-so-little) ways. It might get in the way of everyday tasks like following a recipe or paying a bill. Or it could lower your chances when applying for jobs or training.
Multiply is a free nationwide programme for adults over 19 who want to improve their basic maths skills. At Rural Arts, we give it our own creative twist.
We hold sessions in the studio, where you’ll get to try new creative techniques and make some beautiful things. Each challenge uses numbers in some way, so you’ll sharpen your skills and refresh your memory almost without realising it
For example, slab building with clay means thinking about volumes, weights, angles and symmetry. Or you might make your own Jesmonite trinket dish and need to work out the right weights and ratios for your materials. Maths was never this much fun at school.
The course runs over four weekly sessions and is funded by North Yorkshire County Council. Sessions are run by friendly, patient tutors and everyone is there to support each other, without judgement. Just show up, bring an open mind and be yourself.
Who is it for?
Multiply at Rural Arts is open to adults aged 19 and over living in North Yorkshire.
The course is designed to support those who don’t have a grade 4 (previously grade C) or higher in GCSE maths. But if you think Multiply could help you get a job, progress at work or access further training, you’re welcome to apply whatever qualification you may have.
What will I learn?
The aim is to feel more confident using numbers, whatever that looks like for you. You might feel able to apply for jobs that ask for maths skills. Or you might use your skills in everyday life, with everything from planning the weekly food shop to helping the kids with their homework.
You could also move on to a more advanced numeracy course, or start a new creative or business skills course here at Rural Arts.
