Raku Ceramics (26th June and 10th July)

Fiona Mazza
Rural Arts Thirsk
Wednesday 26th June

Wed 26 June (Making), Wed 10 July (Firing)

£135 (including materials)

Raku is a type of Japanese pottery used traditionally in Japanese tea ceremonies. It is traditionally characterised by being hand-shaped rather than thrown and by the creation of fairly porous vessels which result from low firing temperatures. Raku is a unique form of pottery making whereby you can alter certain variables throughout the design process. In this workshop you can explore these variables by using specialised crackle and copper glazes on your pieces whilst enjoying the journey of experimentation using naked raku resist decoration techniques.

Professional ceramicist Fiona Mazza is a Yorkshire based ceramic artist who specialises in Raku. After falling in love with ceramics, she finds the unpredictable process of Raku inspiring and exciting. Her practice is based on the beautiful markings found on butterfly wings and she hand-builds, slip casts or hand carves vessels which are then coloured and fired outside in her own hand built Raku kiln. Elements of smoke and crackle are common elements to her work which is also displayed in our Courthouse Gallery throughout the year. Fiona has been teaching for over 15 years and making for 20 years in her own studio in Pateley Bridge.

This workshop will be running over two full days (10.00am-4.00pm); Wednesday 26th June will be the first day of making giving enough time to bisque fire your work. Three weeks after on Wednesday 10th July you will be glazing and firing your work at Rural Arts.

Please note that the firing of your work will be done outside in Rural Arts car park, so bring a warm coat or umbrella and keep your fingers crossed for good weather.

On Wednesday 10th July, please bring a bag or a box so you are able to transport your work safely home with you.

All materials and equipment will be provided. Please bring along an apron.
