Pine Needle Coiled Baskets

The Courthouse Thirsk
Saturday 7th April

(£50 + 5 Materials)

This workshop demonstrates an introduction to basketry, led by botanical artist and maker Sherry Doyal. Within this workshop you can develop your basketry skills and focus on the careful making of a pine coiled basket. You will be guided to create patterns with pine needle, raphia and waxed linen. In this workshop you have the choice to make a small circular vessel basket, a small picture frame or a shape inspired by a bee skept.

All materials and tools will be provided. All levels welcome.

Sherry Doyal works with both natural science and historical collections to make her material botanic vessels and art objects. Sherry’s artistic practice has developed with her training of conservation, following her career working with organic artefacts at the British Museum. Her creative process usually starts with a found object where she then selects materials and combines them with plant dyes, resin and beeswax for colour, scent and tack. Sherry has exhibited recently in the North Yorkshire Open Studios and SWARM shown at 3 venues including North York Moors National Park.
