Afghan Youth Project (2021/22)

As part of North Yorkshire Together, Rural Arts runs sessions to support young refugees from Afghanistan.

The Afghan Youth Project aims to improve the quality of life of young people who have fled Afghanistan, and are now temporarily living in the Selby and Scarborough District.

Our sessions are designed to:

  • Build young people’s self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Develop young people’s ability to manage personal and social relationships.
  • Create learning opportunities for young people to develop new skills.
  • Encourage positive group atmospheres.
  • Build the capacity of young people to consider risk, make reasoned decisions and take control.
  • Help young people to develop a ‘world view’ which widens horizons and invites social commitment.

What the sessions involve

At our Wednesday and Sunday youth groups, we offer a range of fun activities.

On Wednesdays, there are indoor physical activities building on skills including team work, self-esteem, self-confidence, listening skills, communication and creative thinking. There’s also creative activities to develop wellbeing and self-expression.

On Sundays the group travels offsite for outdoor sport activities, which tend to be young person led. These might include cricket or football. Meanwhile we also have a small group indoors, who might make music, or take part in an arts and craft activity, such as card making, colouring in, or drawing and art.
