Hard Ground Etching (5th Oct)

The Old Courthouse Thirsk
Saturday 5th October

(£55 + £10 Materials)

Explore this traditional etching technique using acrylic grounds and copper sulphate to create lines, tone and texture.

In this session you will be using acrylic hard ground to coat the metal etching plate, before making marks into the grounds, revealing the metal beneath. The plate is then etched in a copper sulphate solution, which bites lines into the plate. These lines hold the ink which then prints onto the paper. Through this process you'll learn how to apply and draw into the grounds to create images that explore line, tone and texture. By the end of the day you will have a small series of prints as well as an etching plate that you can develop further with other techniques at a later date.

Suitable For: Beginners (This is an introductory class)
Materials: All materials will be provided, please bring an apron.
