Hello one and all and welcome back to ‘A Rural Review.’ With summer in full swing, we at Rural Review HQ went full Cliff Richard and decided to go on a little summer holiday, which has meant we haven’t posted for a little while, so apologies about that! We promise to make it up to you by recapping all the exciting things we have gotten up to recently and also what incredibly fun things Rural Arts has coming up – deal?!

Summer Holiday Activities

Come down and you can make one just like this! |
Unlike us here at the blog, who packed up as soon as the sun peeked out from behind the clouds, Rural Arts does not stop for the summer – in fact it puts on even more activities! All through August, we are running special summer holiday workshops for children and young people, all based around William Shakespeare, as 2016 marks 400 years since The Bard’s passing. Therefore, we have had puppet making and portrait drawing galore over the past couple of weeks, and we have seen some truly fantastic results. The best bit? These workshops run throughout the whole of August – so if you haven’t had a go yet – you still can! Click HERE to book on and get those creative juices flowing.

Cometh and seeth this amazing exhibition(eth) |
Speaking of Shakespeare – these activities are not the only way we are celebrating the most famous playwright of all time this year! Throughout the month of August Mel Davis Kim Coley have their amazing exhibition titled ‘As You Like It’ at our Courtroom. The two worked together to create a series of paintings and graphics influenced by the drama, characters and life of England’s greatest playwright and poet. With over 37 plays, together with his poetry and sonnets, Shakespeare is as vital and relevant today as he ever was. This is a unique exhibition created for Rural Arts, and trust us you don’t want to miss it! You can see it until the end of August, and we are open Monday to Saturday 10am – 4:30pm.
World Cup ’66
We are sad to say that if you think this event is over… it is now (not sure this worked but we had to try didn’t we?) On the 30th July we live streamed this live stage-show performance celebrating the highlight of English footballing history – which took place 50 years ago to the day. It was a fantastic event, full of great music, interesting stories from the time and of course some of the footballing action from that fateful day. This is the final performance before we go back into the National Theatre Live Season, and if you keep reading you might find out more about that…. (#intrigue)

I don’t think you’re ready for this poetry! (kudos to anyone who got that) |
Next week is the final performance of our FRESH 2016 performance season (boo) but boy are we going out with a bang (yay!). Last year performance poet Vanessa absolutely blew a sold out audience away with her awe inspiring poetry collection. We are more than thrilled to have ‘the Beyonce of poetry’ (that is Blue Peter’s words, not mine…) back this year, on thursday 18th August, to round off our season. This week tickets have been flying off the shelves, and don’t have many left so make sure you grab them now! To do that click HERE.

This will be us next week! |
It’s time to face the facts: summer is nearing an end – I’m sorry but it’s true. Soon school will be back in session, leaves will be falling off the trees and the days will be getting shorter and colder quicker than you can say ‘ maybe we’ll have an Indian Summer’. However, every inevitable cloud has a silver lining – and that is the release of our Autumn 2016 season! All our exciting workshops, performances and all day activities are on our website to peruse at your leisure and click HERE to do just that. However – we are so excited by what we have in store we have decided we wanted to make a big deal of it – so we will be at Thirsk Market, next Saturday (20th) all day, meeting the lovely people of Thirsk, showing off everything we are getting up to and maybe giving out a piece of cake or three! Please come and say hello – we would love to see you.
NT Live – The Deep Blue Sea
Still feeling #intrigued?! Well feel it no more! on the 1st September, National Theatre Live’s Autumn season kicks off with an absolute corker. When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbours in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge begins to emerge. With it comes a portrait of need, loneliness and long-repressed passion. This has been getting amazing reviews and tickets are selling fast for this performance which will be live streamed straight from London – so book your tickets HERE.
And that’s it! We promise not to leave it so long next time – thanks very much for reading and we will see you next week!
