A Rural Review 2016: Week 12!

We are back! Yes Rural Review returns after a small hiatus to recap another action-packed week at Rural Arts and to look ahead at what is coming up in our calendar. This post includes young people’s projects, executioners and even a Mayor at our Courthouse! With interest now thoroughly peaked (we assume) lets move onto…

What’s been happening
CREATEtour
It’s looking good!
This week saw the return of our CREATEtour – the chance for young people to learn what it is like to be a professional theatre company,  create their own show and then tour it around local venues.  The week was run by The Harmonettes (more on them later..) and supported by the ON Tour team, who have spent this week out in Selby with ten enthusiastic and talented young people (lucky them!) seeing the piece take shape and getting involved in a game or two. After seeing the piece in rehearsal, it is fair to say we are pretty darn excited for their touring week – make sure you check back with us next week to hear all about it!

FRESH Exhibition – An Important Visitor!
Some highlights of an excellent day.

Our FRESH exhibition, our new scheme where recent graduates have the chance to exhibit their work in our gallery, has been a rip roraring success if we do say so ourselves. This week, we were lucky enough to have a visit from The Lord Mayor of York to see this exhibition! She was accompanied by some of the artists and Angela Holt, our gallery manager – there was even time to stop off for a coffee in our fabulous café. It is with a heavy heart that we have to report that our FRESH exhibition is coming to an end this weekend – but never fear – we will be running another one of these exhibitions later on in the year so keep your eyes peeled for that. At any rate, this visit was a brilliant way to round off a lovely two weeks.

What’s coming up!

National Theatre Live – Hangmen
Another week, and  another National Theatre Live performance – however we are particularly excited about this one! This streaming is of the brand new, smash-hit London show Hangmen; a darkly comic tale which has wowed auidences and critics alike since it opened late last year. Featuring a stellar cast (including David Morrisey), laugh out loud moments and the second best executioner in the world, you can’t afford to miss it! There are still a few tickets available, and you can get them HERE. Be warned though , they are going fast! Also, if you fancy a giggle – why not check out the trailer for the show!?

The Harmonettes – with special guests!
Unfortunately there is no triple tandem in the show..

Remember, way back at the start of this blog, when we painted the picture of the CREATEtour and the fabulous show they were creating? (although suggesting our writing style ‘paints a picture’ might be slightly ambitious..)  Well if you head on down to Hackforth, Sessay, Pickering or Huton Rudby next week– you have the chance to see it! The Harmonettes have been touring all this week throughout North Yorkshire, and are doing the same next week with their brand new show Dorothy’s War. It is an amazing show in itself,  full of recognisable songs, an engaging story and nostalgic feel, and it has the added bonus of an opening act by our Create Tour participants! To book yourselves some tickets to any of these performances – please click HERE

Tour De Yorkshire Day!

Hand’s up who has seen this on our homepage?!
The Tour De Yorkshire is back! Yes everyone’s favourite North-East based bike race is returning, and is heading through Thirsk on the 1st May.  Now you didn’t think Rural Arts was going to let this opportunity just pedal by without hosting something did you?! As inevitable it was that Rural Arts would host something – it was equally inevitable that we would have to make some puns about it.. So to get you ‘gearing’ up for the race, Rural Arts are hosting some some ‘off the chain’ activities including making your own flag to wave as the cyclists go past. Also, if you get tyred outside and want to have a sit down – Rural Arts will be open throughout the day – we have a bar and a live stream of the race for you to follow. It promises to be a ‘wheelie’ good day so make sure you get involved! More information can be found HERE.

With those terrible puns out of the way, we have reached the end of this weeks blog. Make sure you check in next week when we will have another Rural Review for you. See you soon!
