A Taste of Art: Introduction to Sashiko Embroidery (1st May)

Rural Arts Thirsk
Wednesday 1st May

Sashiko is a form of Japanese folk embroidery using the basic running stitch to create a patterned background. The geometric patterns include straight or curved lines of stitching arranged in a repeating pattern. Sashiko means little stabs and refers to the small stitches used in this form of needlework. Originally the technique was used as a form of darning to repair or add strength to worn areas of clothing or to create insulated double layer coats. Due to its beauty and durability, it has become an art form rather than just functional and is very popular with quilters.

Within this workshop you are going to work on a number of different designs and patterns, learning about the traditions of the type of embroidery in the use of methods, fabrics, threads and needles.

This workshop is suitable for all abilities, including those with no prior embroidery experience/skill.

All materials will be provided

'Taste of Art' workshops are creative sessions that are friendly, informal and good fun and aim to provide an introduction to a technique or art form. Lasting an hour and a half they are run by qualified tutors and artists and aim to give you an insight into a craft and inspire you to do more.

You don't have to be a creative person to take part as the sessions are aimed at all levels and the focus is on experimentation. Most of our sessions use materials and equipment that are accessible and low cost and we always try to provide ceramic activities that utilise our kiln.

'Taste Of Art' sessions will provide you with an opportunity to make new friends and meet up with other budding creatives.

'Taste of Art' sessions run during the school term and a detailed programme is released on this website.

Please bring an apron.
