Textile projects
can vary in length; from one-off taster sessions to
longer projects in which wall-hangings, banners, bunting
and flags can be made.
One or more techniques can be
used together to create impressive pieces of multimedia work.
Textiles can be woven, dyed, hand painted,
digital transfer printed, hand and machine embroidered and embellished with beads and sequins.
Felt making
This ancient process involves creating a decorative piece of work
from raw materials. Working with merino wools, participants can
create colourful, hand-felted material which can be used for bags
and clothing, wall-hangings and soft furnishings.
Bonded Textiles
Using sparkly and textural fabrics this technique enables
participants to design and create their own surface patterns,
which can then be embellished and adorned with stitch and
beading. The process involves collaging with fabrics, which are
then fused together using specialist fabric heat adhesives. These
fabric pieces can be used to create bags, purses, soft furnishings, wall-hangings and flags.
Batik
This traditional technique is a resist method of decorating silk or
cotton fabric using hot wax and cold water dyes. This technique
can be offered as part of a multicultural project, enabling
participants to look at styles of batik from different cultures,
including Africa and India. Wall-hangings, soft furnishings and
flags can be made from batik decorated fabrics.
Velvet Devoré
Devoré is a method of etching into the surface of velvet. The
fabric is then dyed and can be decorated further with stitch and
embellishment. This technique has been used to create scarves
and accessories in past projects, as well as wall-hangings and
soft furnishings.
