Recycled Materials

Proving that interesting and innovative objects can be created from otherwise discarded materials, Rural Arts delivers a number of creative workshops working with recyclables. Using objects from manufacturing and
household waste we encourage participants to use junk creatively, encouraging an environmentally aware outlook.
These workshops fit well into environmental projects.
Groups are encouraged to collect their own recyclables, although the artist will supply materials too.

Junk Metal
Making 2D and 3D objects from discarded aluminium and
copper metal sheeting is a popular workshop for all ages.
Participants work with sheets of soft metal, which they hammer
and bash with textured objects to create interesting surface
patterns and marks. The metal is then shaped and coloured. Wallhangings,
mobiles and sculptures can be created for indoors.

Junk Sculpture
Let your imagination go wild and create fantastic giant
sculptures from materials that would normally be thrown away.
Plastic bottles and bottle tops, cardboard packaging, polythene
and fabrics can all be used in this manner to create individual or
group made sculptures.

Carrier Bag Weaving
Create a fantastic wall-hanging using colourful recycled carrier
bags, cellophane, polythene and coloured plastics.
The weavings are suitable for display indoors or outdoors and
suitable for all ages from toddlers upwards.

Newspaper Body Sculpture
Take part in this hilarious workshop and use your own body as
a mould to make a life-sized sculpture using newspaper and
sticky tapes. This session is a great icebreaker for any event
and is greatly enjoyed by children, young people and those with
disabilities. The workshops can be tailor-made to suit a
particular occasion, for example village scarecrow festivals, or
be tied into a school curriculum.

Junk Percussion
Make all kinds of musical percussion instruments from
everyday recycled objects such as plastic bottles, tubs, cartons
and boxes. Decorate your instruments with wrappers, coloured
tapes and paints, then work with a percussionist to create your
own musical performance.
