Coulby Newham Ceramic Mural

Designed by artist Angela Hall and made with children, parents, Surestart and school staff, and childminders from Rosewood School, Coulby Newham. This project was a collaboration between the school and Surestart and is installed in the foyer of the new Surestart building.

The project involved the creation of ceramic faces using plaster stamps that were applied to a series of handmade wavy tiles.

Nursery and pre-nursery children participated over this week long project and learned how to use pre-made shapes and textures to make marks in relief, and about the properties of clay and the use of clay as a material in the local environment.

In addition the children hand painted their individual tiles which were fired and framed by the artist. The finished piece provides a lively, tactile and colourful welcome for parents and children and a permanent reminder of the project.
